Hadrians Wall
We are one and a half miles from Hadrian's Wall (World Heritage Site) Forts, Milecastles, Settlements, Audio-video displays at Birdoswald all within cycling distance of the house. We are also only 500 yards from The Pennine Way (the Alston Greenhead Bellingham section of the National Long Distance Walk)
Some 35-40 miles to the West is the Northumbrian coastline with it's historic castles, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh (right) and it's world famous bird sanctuary on the Farne Islands, not to mention the Famous "Craster Kippers" - a nice day out in the car.
Northumberland coastline

Haltwhistle Golf Course is approx. 800 yards from our house. A friendly local course which welcomes visitors.

Try a day out at Kielder Water, fish, go boating or just relax.
Go back in time!
Visit Beamish (19th Century mining village complete with trams , trolleybuses, sweetie shop and of course a trip down the "pit.")
Historic stately homes
Wallington, Belsay and Cragside (first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electric power) these are all easily reached from Longbyre.
Fancy a day shopping?
The Metro Centre at Gateshead is for you.
(One of the largest shopping complexes in Europe) - just 45minutes by car.
To the East there is Carlisle "The Border City" 12 times part of Scotland 13 times part of England , steeped in history from the Roman times, to the Anglo-Scottish wars to The "Border Reivers"
A mere 14 miles "up the road" from Carlisle and you are in Scotland. Gretna Green to be exact. Visit the traditional "Blacksmiths" where years ago runaways eloped to marry.
England's "highlands" go South from Carlisle and within 30 minutes you are in the Lake District. Lakes, mountains, places to walk, explore. Round the day off by returning to Longbyre via Hartside mountain pass - see the wild and rugged North Country first hand.
All in all, if you want peace and quiet, a day out walking, or cycling, days out in the car, to go to the sea, to steep yourself in history or just to chill out - this is the base for you.
